Legendary drum and bass label to release dubstep

2008-09-21

Ram Records, one of the longest running labels in drum & bass, initially set up by Andy C and Ant Miles, will release its first ever dubstep release next month.
The legendary Ram has been behind some of the biggest hits within the scene, including ‘Body Rock’, the massive collaboration between Shimon & Andy C, as well as Origin Unknown’s “Valley of the Shadows”.
The forthcoming release, ‘Eastern Jam’ by Chase & Status, will be the first time Ram has strayed from its drum & bass roots and released something of a different nature and tempo, and is an indication of how drum & bass artists are beginning to incorporate dubstep into their sound.

Continuing on with this trend, DStyle, the label behind TC’s ‘Evolution’ will also be releasing a dubstep remix by Caspa of TC’s ‘Where’s My Money?’, a track that has had support from both sides of the spectrum, from Skream and Rusko through to Fabio and Andy C.

Many DJs, producers and fans have begun to question the nature of dubstep’s relevancy within drum & bass. The tempos are totally different, yet both styles have the similar influences.

But what is it that’s making such established labels now begin to change the style of their releases, and so many producers to begin producing dubstep?

Classic examples of producers who’ve been affiliated with drum & bass and have now begin to produce dubstep include Martyn, Nero (UK) and more recently, Black Sun Empire – who’s new dubstep production work can be found under their moniker; Shadows of the Empire.
